Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support? Most of my books are dedicated to Carol, my wife. Her help and support have been invaluable. I’m very new to the ebook scene, but my ebook publishers, Orchard Wall, are a delight to work with.
Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you? I write in order to be read. One part of success means getting out to the widest possible audience. However, literature also exists in its own right, so to speak. There are brilliant writers whom few have ever heard of, but this fact doesn’t make them any less brilliant.
It is vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing, tell us about your marketing campaign? My publishers have set the direction for our marketing strategy but I have remained very involved as I find digital marketing so fascinating. It is incredible how precisely you can target a reader based on other books they have read in the same genre or by similar authors using platforms like Facebook and Google. My publishers believe in an always on approach and making sure my book is visible to readers where ever they may be online.
Tell us about your new book? What’s it about and why did you write it? ‘The Sea and the Silence’ is an epic love story set in Ireland in the mid-1940s. It is told from the point of view of Iz, a beautiful young woman, who has grown up within the crumbling Anglo Irish ascendancy class. But Ireland is changing rapidly and Iz finds herself caught up in history.
This is a period in Ireland little written of or understood. Once I had the idea in my head, I had no option but to write it.
If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask? Jesus Christ would be a most interesting guest—and I would never need to fear of running out of wine.
When you are not writing, how do you like to relax? I walk, garden and play golf. Sometimes I sail.
A book for your head and your heart. Winner of the Prix de l’Europe 2013.
A powerful novel from one of Ireland’s best writers on the turbulent birth of a nation, and the lovers it divides
Ireland 1945. Young and beautiful, Iz begins a life on the south-east coast with her new husband. As she settles in to try and make her life by the ever restless sea, circumstances that have brought Iz to the town of Monument are shrouded in mystery. However, history, like the sea cannot stay silent for long. The war in Europe is over, and change is about to brush away the old order. Soaring across the decades that follow Ireland’s newly won independence, sweeping across the fierce class issues and battles over land ownership that once defined Irish society, The Sea and the Silence is an epic love story set inside the fading grandeur of the Anglo-Irish class.
