Author Interview – Alex A. Akira

What books have most influenced your life? After Cinderella at age five, I devoured Greek and Roman Mythlogy, followed by Candide, the French classic about a simpleton at age eight. At nine I stumbled across Breakfast of Champions, by Kurt Vonnegut. It taught me about perspective, it was an extremely valuable lesson at the time.
Topaz by Leon Uris was my first thriller and anything by Ayn Rand made a deep impression on me. At fifteen I discovered A Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, a book that I reread to this day. And then there are the works of Andrew Vachss, David Gemmell, Octavia E. Butler… Sorry too many to name.

Have you ever considered anyone as a mentor? In addition to being my everything, my mate is my mentor, he is my Sensei, you see. I’m not kidding, really… he’s my Shotokan Sensei.

Who is your favorite author and why? I’m going to twist this question bit. I miss David Gemmell’s storytelling abilities tremendously now that the has passed. And I wish Stieg Larsson had more time with us to give us additional stories.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Here or aboard writing, illustrating, designing and practicing martial arts… it’s what I do… it’s all I do, lol.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? I don’t know how new he is, but Andrew Ashling’s Dark Tales of Randamor the Recluse series is pretty amazing and I love Kia Zi Shiru’s work. Now she is a promising new author. She uses few words to express volumes; magical and haunting are words that come to mind.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? An editor. Make sure your book’s cover pops out. If you are an intelligent individual and have limited funds, self-publish… but make sure you have an editor.

What contributes to making a writer successful? Monetarily, smart work, readership and marketing. Personally, being passionate about that which you write and learning to improve upon your skills brings internal rewards that I call success.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? My apologies for publishing Dragon and Crow before I got an editor, a newly edited version will be available by March 1, 2013. Thank you for reading my books.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Meditation, yoga, walking/running and martial arts… and writing.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? I’m more relaxed. My karate and sports satisfy my metaphysical side. My nine-five (I’m a designer at a busy accessories and giftware studio) rewards my artistic side, but writing frees my emotional creativity. I am a more balanced individual when I include writing in my life.
